Audition is a film that dives deep into the psychological horror genre, delivering unsettling twists while examining the darker side of human desire. But even the most intriguing concepts can stumble along the way.

A Twisted Audition Process

In Takashi Miike's 'Audition,' we follow Shigeharu Aoyama, a middle-aged widower who, after seven years of solitude, seeks the guidance of a colleague to find a new wife. They decide to stage a fake audition for a film as a means to attract prospective partners. Among the many women who come to audition, Shigeharu becomes enamored with the quiet and mysterious Asami. However, as their relationship unfolds, it becomes clear that Asami harbors secrets that lead to horrifying consequences. The film cleverly juxtaposes the mundanity of dating with the underlying horror of manipulation and obsession.

A Mix of Strong and Weak Roles

Ryo Ishibashi delivers a solid performance as Shigeharu, successfully presenting the character’s vulnerability and desperation. Eihi Shiina's portrayal of Asami is haunting, displaying a mix of innocence and menace that makes her character memorable. However, some of the supporting characters feel underdeveloped, leaving them as mere plot devices rather than fully fleshed individuals. Particularly, Jun Kunimura as Yasuhisa Yoshikawa offers a strong presence, but his role feels somewhat redundant, as the focus is understandably on Shigeharu and Asami. A bit more depth could have elevated the overall experience.

Atmosphere Meets Pacing Issues

Takashi Miike's direction is both bold and unsettling, creating an atmosphere that grips you from the start. The cinematography, with sharp contrasts and claustrophobic framing, enhances the film's tension significantly. However, the pacing can drag at times, especially in the middle act where the buildup feels unnecessarily prolonged, which may test the audience's patience. The choice of visuals—from the starkly lit auditions to the darker, more grotesque scenes—effectively conveys a sense of dread that lingers. Still, a tighter edit would have made these impactful moments hit harder.

Uneasy Yet Engaging Viewing

Watching 'Audition' is often an excruciating experience, not necessarily because it's overly frightening but due to its drawn-out pacing and uncomfortable themes. The film’s slow burn might frustrate those not attuned to its subtleties, as it blends romance with psychological horror. Moments of genuine suspense are punctured by stretches where the narrative meanders, leaving audiences anxious for something to happen. While it builds an unsettling atmosphere, the balance between horror and character development falters, leading to a few moments of boredom and confusion regarding character motivations.
