Day Shift

If you're up for a mix of action, comedy, and some outlandish vampire hunting, 'Day Shift' has bits of entertainment. Just don’t expect it to bite too deeply into any serious themes.

A Vampire Hunter's Dilemma

The film follows Bud Jablonski, played by Jamie Foxx, a down-on-his-luck vampire hunter in Los Angeles. Strapped for cash, Bud has a week to gather funds for his daughter’s tuition and braces. Partnering with an unlikely sidekick, Seth (Dave Franco), they navigate the underbelly of Los Angeles, hunting vampires while dealing with Bud's mounting personal and financial pressures. The premise is ripe for both action and comedy, but it often loses focus among convoluted subplots and character arcs that feel half-baked. Oddly, the stakes aren’t always clear, which detracts from the urgency of Bud’s quest.

Foxx Leads a Mixed Cast

Jamie Foxx carries the film as Bud Jablonski, delivering a solid performance that blends his comedic timing with some intense action moments. Dave Franco as Seth provides a decent foil but often veers into the territory of the annoying sidekick rather than a genuine partner. The film does feature a notable appearance from Snoop Dogg as Big John, who adds some flavor, though his character feels underutilized. Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Heather and Meagan Good as Bud's wife Jocelyn present some depth but are given too little screen time to develop their characters meaningfully. Ultimately, the ensemble cast has potential, but not all characters get enough room to shine.

Energetic Yet Flawed Direction

Director J.J. Perry, known for his stunt work, brings a somewhat energetic style to the film. The action sequences are well-executed, showcasing impressive choreography and creativity, but the pacing suffers from sluggish transitions between scenes. The visuals are colored with a blend of vibrant and dark tones, fitting the vampire-hunting theme; however, some CGI effects come off as cheap and detract from the overall immersion. The comedy could have used sharper editing since some jokes land flat or feel drawn out. There are notable moments, but the film doesn’t always capitalize on its own fun premise.

Mixed Emotional Responses

Watching 'Day Shift' is a mixed bag. While there are moments of genuine humor and some decent action that can evoke excitement, much of the film feels drawn out and bloated. The stakes never seem high enough to invest emotionally in Bud's struggles, and this disconnect leads to moments of boredom. The film's attempt at blending emotional scenes with slapstick humor often falls flat, making you wish it either committed to the action or the comedy rather than trying to juggle both. Overall, it has its highs but is often bogged down by pacing issues and missed comedic opportunities.
