The film tells the story of Sam, a skilled assassin played by Karen Gillan, who must protect an 8-year-old girl named Emily. In a bid to shield her from a dangerous crime syndicate, Sam reunites with her estranged mother, Scarlet, and her deadly associates, including characters portrayed by Michelle Yeoh and Lena Headey. The plot unfolds in a chaotic blend of action and dark humor, featuring over-the-top assassinations and a quirky aesthetic that feels reminiscent of graphic novels. However, while the premise has potential for an engaging narrative, it often gets diluted by the convoluted script and pacing issues that disrupt the flow.

Strong Performances, Weak Development

Karen Gillan does a solid job as Sam, but her character often feels underdeveloped amidst the ensemble cast. Lena Headey shines in her role as Scarlet, capturing the fierce and protective maternal instinct, yet her character’s motivations could have used more depth. The standout performances come from Michelle Yeoh and Angela Bassett, whose portrayals of skilled assassins bring a refreshing energy to the otherwise uneven cast. Sadly, Paul Giamatti's character feels underutilized and serves more as a mere plot device than a fully fleshed-out person.

Navot Papushado's direction leans heavily into stylized violence, with a visual aesthetic that nods to comic book influences. The neon-lit settings and choreographed action sequences are visually striking, but they can also become disorienting, detracting from the narrative. The pacing is inconsistent; certain scenes drag on while others flash by too quickly, leaving emotional moments underexplored. Although the cinematography captures the film's playful tone, the lack of cohesion in visual storytelling often results in a jarring experience.

Excitement Mixed with Boredom

There are moments of genuine excitement and humor, particularly during the action sequences, but they are often overshadowed by slower, less engaging parts of the film. The emotional stakes feel undercut by the film's tone, which oscillates between dark comedy and serious drama without fully committing to either.
