Paranormal Activity is one of those films that made found footage popular, but it’s not without its flaws. While it successfully builds tension, it often relies too heavily on familiar tropes.

A Hauntingly Simple Plot

The film follows Katie and Micah, a young couple who move into a suburban house that soon reveals itself as a site of paranormal activity. Micah decides to document their experiences with a camera, leading to a mixture of mundane daily life and increasingly eerie events. As the nights grow longer and the disturbances become more aggressive, Katie's past with a supposed demonic presence adds layers of tension to the narrative. The film's simplicity, focusing on the couple's interactions and the unseen entity, is both its strength and its limitation, creating a suspenseful atmosphere that sometimes stretches thin over its runtime.

Tense Performances, Lacking Depth

Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat deliver performances that serve the film’s atmosphere well, with their natural chemistry playing a significant role in engaging the viewer. However, the character development is shallow; we barely scratch the surface of their personalities or backgrounds. This lack of depth occasionally makes it hard to fully invest in their plight. The supporting cast, including the psychic played by Mark Fredrichs, is underutilized and feels like an afterthought, leaving the primary focus mostly on the couple without any substantial outside perspective to enhance the tension.

Static Shots, Uneven Pacing

Oren Peli’s direction is straightforward and effective for a low-budget horror film, using handheld camera techniques to create a voyeuristic feel. The dim lighting and static shots contribute to an unsettling atmosphere, but the pacing can sometimes lag, particularly in the middle stretches. The visual style draws heavily on the familiar conventions of found footage, which lends authenticity but can also make it feel formulaic. The static nature of the shots occasionally leads to a monotonous viewing experience, as it relies on viewers’ anticipation of what might happen next rather than dynamic storytelling.

Tension with Frustration

Watching Paranormal Activity is a mixed experience; there's a steady drip of tension, but it can be punctuated by moments of frustration. As the couple repeatedly dismisses obvious signs and makes questionable decisions—like provoking the entity—viewers may find themselves gnashing their teeth in disbelief. The slow build-up works in parts, yet it also drags at times, causing the viewer to feel the weight of its runtime. The emotional payoff at the end does deliver a jolt, but it can feel less impactful due to the slow pacing leading up to it.
