Shazam!

Shazam! offers a light-hearted take on the superhero genre that manages to blend childhood whimsy with action. It’s as if a kid’s dream of being a hero came to life, but it sometimes feels scattered and overlong.

The film follows teenage Billy Batson, who is thrust into the superhero world after being chosen by a dying wizard. By uttering the word 'Shazam!', he transforms into an adult superhero (Zachary Levi) with extraordinary powers. As he grapples with his new identity, he must face the villainous Dr. Sivana (Mark Strong), who seeks to steal Shazam's powers. The story attempts to balance humor and heartfelt moments, showcasing a coming-of-age journey, but at times it gets bogged down by its overly long runtime and some clichéd plot points.

Zachary Levi brings a playful energy to the role of Shazam, effectively embodying the childlike spirit of Billy Batson. Strong's performance as Dr. Sivana is solid but unfortunately feels one-dimensional, lacking the depth needed to make him truly compelling. Asher Angel as Billy is decent, but his character sometimes fades into the background. Jack Dylan Grazer shines as Freddy, providing comic relief and relatable moments, yet it feels like the film could have given more time to fleshing out the supporting characters, who often come across as mere plot devices.

David F. Sandberg’s direction is energetic, and the lighter visual tone is a refreshing contrast to the darker entries in the DC Extended Universe. The special effects are vibrant, bringing to life the powers of Shazam and the fantastical elements of the story. However, the pacing suffers, especially in the second act, where the film seems to lose its momentum. The editing choices occasionally disrupt the flow, making certain scenes feel drawn out. The humor generally lands well, but the more serious moments sometimes clash with the playful tone, creating tonal inconsistencies.

Watching Shazam! evokes a mix of laughter and nostalgia, especially for those who remember the joy of childhood heroism. Yet, the film sometimes overstays its welcome, with certain stretches feeling tedious. While it has its share of feel-good moments, there are parts that simply drag on, causing the emotional beats to lose impact.
