If you're looking for a crime thriller that combines numbers with action, 'The Accountant' delivers. But while it showcases some solid performances and an intriguing premise, it also stumbles in pacing and character depth.

A Life of Numbers and Danger

'The Accountant' follows Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck), a math genius with autism who uses his extraordinary skills to oversee the finances of dangerous criminal organizations. As the Treasury Department, led by Ray King (J.K. Simmons), closes in on him, Christian finds himself tangled in a web of deceit and violence. His life becomes even more complicated when he takes on a legitimate client, a robotics company, where he uncovers financial discrepancies that could threaten lives. The film attempts to weave these threads into a complex narrative, but it sometimes feels overloaded with plotlines and fails to dive deeply into character motivations.

Performances That Miss the Mark

Ben Affleck gives a solid performance as Christian, effectively portraying the character's complexities and social challenges. However, some supporting characters, like Cynthia Addai-Robinson's Marybeth, feel underdeveloped and do little to elevate the story. Anna Kendrick attempts to inject some levity into the film, but her character's role seems shoehorned and distracts from the main plot. J.K. Simmons brings his usual charisma, but even he can't save the lack of depth in the character interactions. The film would have benefited from a tighter focus on fewer characters with more nuanced arcs.

The editing could have been more cohesive to maintain the film's rhythm, as it often feels like two different movies attempting to coexist.
