Old Blood Meets New Blood

In this third installment of the franchise, Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) faces off against Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson), a former co-founder of The Expendables turned arms dealer. After realizing that the old ways of the Expendables may not suffice against Stonebanks’ high-tech arsenal, Barney decides to recruit a new team of younger, tech-savvy mercenaries. This generational clash of combat styles sets the stage for an action-packed mission, as they aim to thwart Stonebanks' deadly plans while navigating the complexities of friendship and loyalty among teammates. Unfortunately, the plot often feels recycled and predictable, failing to introduce anything genuinely fresh.

Stars in a Weak Spotlight

The film boasts a hefty lineup with veterans like Stallone, Schwarzenegger, and Ford, yet the performances often languish in the shadow of their past glory. Stallone delivers an expectedly solid performance, but the characters generally lack depth. Mel Gibson as the villain has moments of charisma, but ultimately feels underutilized. The newer cast members, such as Ronda Rousey and Kellan Lutz, fail to leave a lasting impact, suffering from underwritten roles that rely heavily on action rather than character development. It’s disappointing to see such talent squandered on half-baked characters.

Director Patrick Hughes presents a film that oscillates between gaudy action sequences and lackluster pacing. While there are glimpses of potential in the high-tempo action scenes, they often feel cluttered and over-edited, detracting from the visceral excitement. The cinematography lacks consistency, swinging between straightforward shots and chaotic camera work that can leave viewers feeling disoriented. The visual effects are standard for a contemporary action flick, but they don't elevate the narrative, ultimately failing to create any iconic moments that might linger in the viewer's memory.

Boredom Amidst the Chaos

Watching The Expendables 3 can sometimes feel like dragging through molasses. Though there are occasional bursts of excitement, the pacing is uneven, leading to stretches of boredom that can be pretty frustrating, particularly in the second act. The film tries to tug at emotional strings with themes of friendship and legacy, yet these moments often feel shoehorned and superficial. The humor, while present, doesn’t land as frequently as it should, leaving viewers with a tepid experience rather than the engaging thrill ride it aims to be.
