A Boy and His Legend

Set against the backdrop of World War II, The Water Horse follows a lonely boy named Angus MacMorrow (Alex Etel) who discovers a mysterious egg that hatches into a mythical sea creature. As Angus forms an emotional bond with the creature, he faces challenges from his curmudgeonly surroundings, including the looming war and skeptical adults. The film attempts to weave a tale of friendship and protection, as Angus tries to keep his new friend safe from those who would exploit it. Unfortunately, the story sometimes veers into predictable territory, leading to a lack of narrative tension that could have really elevated the premise.

Moments of Heart, Missed Depth

Alex Etel's portrayal of Angus is endearing, capturing the innocence of childhood well, but at times feels overshadowed by the film's emotional inconsistencies. Emily Watson as Anne MacMorrow brings a warm maternal presence, yet the script doesn't fully utilize her character's potential. Meanwhile, Brian Cox's Old Angus serves as narrator but feels wasted in a role that could have added more depth to the story. The supporting cast, including Ben Chaplin and David Morrissey, are competent but don’t leave much of an impression, which ultimately detracts from the film's emotional weight.
