Unlocked is one of those thrillers that has some interesting ideas but doesn't really hit the mark. While it tries to blend action and espionage, it ultimately feels predictable in execution.

Espionage in Crisis Mode

The film follows CIA agent Alice Racine, played by Noomi Rapace, who has transitioned to a caseworker position in London after a failed mission in Paris. When her mentor, Eric Lasch (Michael Douglas), informs her of an imminent terrorist threat, Alice is reluctantly drawn back into the world she tried to leave. As she digs deeper, she discovers that vital information she uncovered has been compromised, putting her and countless others at risk. The storyline presents a familiar cat-and-mouse game, but the execution lacks the necessary tension to elevate it beyond typical genre fare.

Performances with Mixed Impact

Noomi Rapace delivers a solid performance as Alice, embodying the character's internal struggle well. Orlando Bloom, as Jack Alcott, provides commendable support, though his character often feels underwritten. The presence of veterans like Michael Douglas and John Malkovich adds gravitas, yet their characters could have been fleshed out further. Toni Collette as Emily Knowles brings some energy but doesn't have enough screen time to make a significant impact. Overall, while the cast shows promise, some characters feel like missed opportunities.

Directed by Michael Apted, Unlocked features a straightforward approach that doesn't do much to stand out within the action-thriller genre.
