Like Stars on Earth

Unlike many family dramas, 'Like Stars on Earth' actually tries to address serious issues like dyslexia and the pressures of the education system. While its heart is in the right place, the execution can feel a bit heavy-handed at times.

A Young Boy's Struggles

The film revolves around Ishaan Awasthi, an eight-year-old boy who sees the world differently than the adults in his life. His love for colors, kites, and other wonders clashes with the expectations for academic success and conformity. After struggling in a traditional school setting, he is sent to a boarding school where he meets Ram Shankar Nikumbh, an art teacher who recognizes Ishaan’s unique perspective and helps him understand his dyslexia. Their relationship unfolds against the backdrop of a rigid education system, highlighting the importance of creativity and acceptance in a world that favors conformity.

Performances That Evoke Emotion

Darsheel Safary delivers a touching performance as Ishaan, capturing the innocence and frustration of a misunderstood child. Aamir Khan, playing Nikumbh, brings an engaging warmth to the role, though at times his character's heroism feels a bit exaggerated. The supporting cast, including Tisca Chopra and Vipin Sharma, provide adequate performances but often fall into clichéd stereotypes. The emotional depth of the film could have been enhanced with a more nuanced portrayal of Ishaan's parents, who sometimes come across as mere obstacles rather than fully realized characters.

Aamir Khan’s direction employs some effective visual storytelling, particularly in depicting Ishaan's vibrant inner world against the starkness of his external reality. The cinematography often leans toward a colorful palette that represents Ishaan's imagination, which is refreshing. However, the pacing drags, especially in the middle section, where repetitive scenarios detract from the narrative momentum. Some scenes could benefit from tighter editing, as they linger longer than necessary, resulting in moments of disengagement amid the emotional highs.

Yet, there are stretches of time where the film feels overly melodramatic or drawn out, risking audience fatigue. The emotional beats could have been more impactful with less reliance on clichéd tropes and more subtlety. Instead of just feeling inspired, I found myself wishing it would pick up the pace or move on from certain repetitive themes.
