John David Washington delivers a fiery performance as Malcolm, embodying both confidence and vulnerability. Zendaya matches him with her portrayal of Marie, bringing an emotional depth that is often compelling. However, the dialogue can feel overly theatrical at times, pushing the performances into melodrama rather than authenticity. The characters occasionally come off as caricatures of their roles, which detracts from the emotional weight of their experiences. There are moments where both actors shine, yet they sometimes seem trapped in repetitive cycles of argument that become exhausting.

Sam Levinson's direction is visually striking, with the black-and-white aesthetic enhancing the film's emotional tension. The cinematography captures the claustrophobic atmosphere of their home, effectively mirroring the constraints of their relationship. However, the pacing drags, as scenes often stretch far longer than needed, leading to moments where the audience might tune out or lose interest. While Levinson's intent to make the dialogue feel authentic is commendable, it sometimes results in repetitive exchanges that could have benefited from tighter editing.
