In a mix of claustrophobic horror and action, [REC]² continues the terrifying saga of infection and chaos. It's a worthy sequel that doesn't quite capture the raw intensity of the original but still offers some thrills along the way.

Infection and Chaos Unleashed

[REC]² picks up immediately after its predecessor, with a medical officer and a SWAT team entering a quarantined apartment complex. Their mission? To control the out-of-control infection that has turned residents into something far worse than mere zombies. The film maintains the found-footage style, heightening the tension as they uncover the dark secrets within the building. The incorporation of religious and supernatural elements adds a layer of intrigue, but the plot can feel a bit disjointed as it juggles multiple storylines and character motives, leaving the audience to piece together the chaos amidst the frights.

Characters in the Shadows

Manuela Velasco reprises her role as Ángela Vidal, bringing a sense of urgency to her performance. However, several of the new characters, including Jonathan D. Mellor as Dr. Owen, are underdeveloped and lack the depth needed to resonate with viewers. The supporting cast does their best within the confines of the script, but often, their characters feel like mere fodder for the horror rather than fully fleshed-out individuals. It's a shame, as a stronger ensemble could have elevated the tension further and made the stakes feel more authentic.

Dark Styles, Wobbly Shots

Director Jaume Balagueró sticks closely to the visual style that made the first film work, using tight camera angles and shaky hand-held footage to create an immersive experience. The dark, confined settings enhance the horror, but there are moments where the visual chaos becomes disorienting rather than suspenseful. The pacing also suffers, feeling rushed in parts while dragging in others, which detracts from the mounting dread that the film aims to maintain. Some clever use of night vision and POV shots still manages to deliver effective scares, but it's not without its flaws.

Suspense with Frustration

Watching [REC]² is a mixed bag of suspense and frustration. While the tension occasionally hits the mark, certain sequences feel repetitive and drag on longer than they should. The characters' fates aren’t particularly engaging, leading to moments of disconnection when you might find yourself checking the time. The film does have some genuinely creepy moments and offers enough jump scares to keep horror fans engaged, but those looking for deeper emotional connections might find themselves left wanting.
